FAQ's
Helping You Every Step of the Way
These answers come from the questions our customers ask us most by phone and text, from choosing the right guard to shipping, installation and returns. If you don't find your answer here, call or text us at (973) 227-0717 or email artofgutter@gmail.com and we'll be glad to help.
Ordering & pricing
1. How much do your gutter guards cost, and how much should I order?
Every guard is priced per linear foot, and the current price for each size and color is shown on its product page. Measure the total length of gutter you want to cover and enter that number of feet in the quantity box (feet, not pieces or sections). The quantity box counts in 5-foot steps, and the minimum is 5 feet. Waterlock DIY comes in 4-foot sections and Waterlock Standard in 3.5-foot sections, so for those products we ship enough whole sections to cover the footage you order. We suggest ordering 5 to 10 percent extra for corners and cuts. If you need an amount the quantity box won't accept, call or text us at (973) 227-0717 and we can send you an invoice for it.
2. How do I place an order? Can I order by phone or get an invoice?
The easiest way is on our website: open the Shop menu, choose your product, size and color, enter the number of feet and check out. If you would rather order by phone, or the checkout gives you an error, call or text us at (973) 227-0717 or email artofgutter@gmail.com with the product, color, footage and shipping address, and we will email you an invoice with a secure payment link (check your spam folder if you don't see it). We accept major credit and debit cards online and over the phone.
3. Can I buy your guards on Amazon, Home Depot or in a store?
Yes. You can buy Waterlock guards on our website and on online marketplaces including Amazon, Home Depot, Lowe's and Walmart. Marketplaces sell fixed pack sizes, while our website lets you order by the foot. Not every product is on every marketplace. For example, Micromesh Flat is not sold on Amazon. Home Depot sells our guards online only, so you won't find them on store shelves. Only a few gutter supply houses in the Northeast carry some of our products, so call us before you drive to one.
4. How long are the sections, and how are they packed?
Waterlock Micromesh, Goldguard, Micromesh Flat and Waterlock Pro come in 5-foot sections, Waterlock DIY comes in 4-foot sections, and Waterlock Standard comes in 3.5-foot sections. Most boxes hold up to about 100 feet, so larger orders ship in more than one box. The screws for the whole order are packed together in one labeled box with the installation guide.
5. Do you offer discounts or coupon codes?
Orders of 100 feet or more ship free, and contractors and installers can get dealer pricing through our dealer program. We rarely run sales on our own website. Coupon codes posted on third-party coupon websites (for example 75% off or $500 off) do not come from us and cannot be honored.
6. Can I cancel or change my order?
Yes, as long as it has not shipped. Many orders ship the same day they are placed, so contact us right away by phone, text or email with your order number. A canceled order is refunded to your original payment method. Once an order has shipped it can't be canceled, but you can request a return under our return policy.
Choosing the right guard
1. What colors are available, and how do I match my gutters?
Waterlock Micromesh, Goldguard, Micromesh Flat and Waterlock Pro come in up to 16 standard gutter colors, including white, cream, eggshell, wicker, clay, royal brown, musket brown, dark bronze, terratone, light gray, dark gray, black, forest green, scotch red and copper tone. Waterlock DIY and Waterlock Standard come in four: white, black, royal brown and mill finish. On our aluminum guards the mesh is always unpainted stainless steel, because painted mesh clogs. Colors look different on screens, so order a sample to hold against your gutters, and if you need a color that isn't listed, call or text us before you order.
2. Do you have a gutter guard that slides under the shingles?
Yes. Waterlock Micromesh Flat (stainless steel micromesh) and Waterlock Pro (louvered aluminum, no mesh) slide under the first row of shingles and screw to the front lip of the gutter, so one product fits 5, 6 and 7 inch K-style, box and half-round gutters. The Micromesh Flat is designed for shingle and flat roofs and is not recommended for roofs steeper than 30 degrees or with shingles older than 5 years, because older shingles can crack when lifted. For older roofs we recommend Waterlock Micromesh or Waterlock DIY, which sit on top of the gutter, and on metal roofs we recommend Waterlock Micromesh.
3. Which size do I need, and how do I measure my gutters?
Measure across the top of the gutter, from the outer edge of the front lip to the back of the gutter at the fascia board, and order the guard that matches: 5 inch or 6 inch for K-style and box gutters. For half-round gutters, choose the half-round version in your gutter size (5 inch or 6 inch). For 7 inch gutters, use Waterlock Micromesh Flat or Waterlock Pro, which slide under the shingles and fit 5, 6 and 7 inch gutters. For 8 to 11 inch commercial gutters, use Waterlock Micromesh Flat for 8 inch+ commercial gutters. We do not make guards for 4 inch gutters. If you're unsure, a sample is the easiest way to check the fit before you order.
4. What is the difference between Waterlock Micromesh and Waterlock DIY?
Both use the same stainless steel micromesh. Waterlock Micromesh has a thicker 0.027 inch aluminum frame, a curved front drip edge, a back flap you can screw to the fascia, 5-foot sections and up to 16 colors. Waterlock DIY has a lighter 0.019 inch frame with a flat front and no drip edge, a back edge that rests against the back of the gutter on your hangers, 4-foot sections, four colors and a lower price per foot. If you get heavy snow and ice or your gutters are older, we recommend the thicker Micromesh.
5. What types of gutter guards do you make?
We make three kinds. Micromesh guards (Waterlock Micromesh, Goldguard, DIY and Micromesh Flat) have a fine stainless steel screen that keeps out leaves, pine needles and roof grit, and they are our pick for homes with a lot of trees. Waterlock Standard is our value option, a perforated aluminum cover without mesh that blocks leaves, twigs and seeds. Waterlock Pro is a louvered aluminum cover with no mesh, built for harsher weather, that slides under the shingles. Several of our guards also come in copper.
6. What is the difference between Waterlock Micromesh and Goldguard?
They share the same 0.027 inch aluminum frame, stainless steel micromesh and front drip edge; the main difference is the back edge. On Waterlock Micromesh the back edge turns up and rests against the fascia, so you can add a screw or two into the fascia for extra support, which we recommend for older gutters and for snow and ice. On Goldguard the back edge turns down, so it tucks behind the back of the gutter or sits on your gutter hangers, with screws only along the front, which works best on newer, solidly hung gutters. If your gutters move when you tug on them, choose Micromesh.
7. Do you make guards for half-round gutters?
Yes. Waterlock Micromesh comes in dedicated versions for 5 inch and 6 inch half-round gutters, and in copper for both sizes. They are a little wider than our K-style guards to cover the round profile, so K-style guards do not fit half-round gutters and half-round guards do not fit K-style. Waterlock Micromesh Flat and Waterlock Pro also fit half-round gutters, because they slide under the shingles.
8. Can you help me choose if I send photos?
Yes, please do. Text photos of your gutters, roof edge and drip edge to (973) 227-0717, or email them to artofgutter@gmail.com, and we will tell you which guard and size will fit best. If you already have a sample, a photo of it sitting on your gutter helps the most. We can also send you photos of our guards installed on gutters like yours.
9. What are the guards made of? Will they rust?
Our aluminum guards have a 0.027 inch aluminum frame (Waterlock Micromesh, Goldguard, Micromesh Flat and Pro) or a 0.019 inch frame (DIY and Standard). On our micromesh guards, the mesh is 304 stainless steel locked into the frame with a crimped Z-bend, with no glue or sealant. There is no plastic in them, and they will not rust, corrode or degrade over time. Our copper guards are made from 16 oz copper, and our copper micromesh guards use a brass micromesh.
10. Do you make copper gutter guards?
Yes. We make copper versions of Waterlock Micromesh, Goldguard, Micromesh Flat and Waterlock Pro, including guards for 5 and 6 inch half-round gutters. If you have copper gutters, use copper guards, because aluminum in contact with copper can corrode. Copper products may be made to order, so allow up to two extra days, and all copper sales are final.
Installation & care
1. How do the guards attach? Are screws included?
Yes. Homeowner orders come with all the color-matched, self-tapping zip screws you need, packed with the printed installation guide. If you are a contractor buying at bulk dealer pricing, confirm screws when you order. Drive 3 to 4 screws per section through the front edge of the guard into the top lip of the gutter, using a drill with a 1/4 inch hex nut driver, and never screw into the shingles. On Waterlock Micromesh the back flap rests against the fascia, so you can add one or two screws there for extra strength in snow and ice. Waterlock DIY rests on your gutter hangers and is screwed only along the front edge. If you run short, text your order number to (973) 227-0717 or email it to artofgutter@gmail.com and we'll send more screws.
2. How do the sections join, and how do I handle corners and ends?
Each section has a small overlap at one end (a mesh tab on our micromesh guards). Butt the aluminum frames side by side, lay the overlap of each new section on top of the section already installed so the coverage is continuous, and put a screw near the joint. For corners, cut each piece at 45 degrees; an angle grinder with a thin cut-off wheel gives the cleanest cut. Try to keep every cut piece at least 1.5 to 2 feet long, because pieces shorter than about a foot can bend out of shape. We don't sell pre-made corners or end caps right now. Installers usually bend a small end cap from a scrap of gutter coil, and pre-cut gutter guard end caps are also sold by other suppliers.
3. The guard won't sit flat on my gutter. What should I do?
The guard should lie flat or tilt slightly toward the front of the gutter, never back toward the house. A common cause of a poor fit is a roof drip edge that sticks out from the fascia or sits low inside the gutter. On Waterlock DIY you can often fix this by bending the back edge in by hand, which gains about 1/8 to 1/4 inch. If that isn't enough, Waterlock Micromesh, whose back flap rests against the drip edge, usually fits better. Micromesh Flat, which slides under the shingles, is another option for roofs with shingles less than 5 years old and a pitch under 30 degrees. Don't cut into the crimped edges that hold the mesh. Text photos to (973) 227-0717 or email them to artofgutter@gmail.com and we'll help you find the fix. If the guards still don't suit your gutters, contact us before you install more: you can request a return of unused guards in their original packaging within 30 days under our return policy (copper products are final sale).
4. Can I install the guards myself? Is there an installation guide?
Yes, if you are comfortable working on a ladder. Waterlock DIY is designed for homeowners to install themselves. For Waterlock Micromesh we recommend professional installation. Micromesh Flat slides under the first row of shingles. We also recommend professional installation for it, and it is not for roofs with shingles older than 5 years or a pitch over 30 degrees. You'll need a drill with a 1/4 inch hex nut driver for the included screws, plus an angle grinder (cleanest cut) or tin snips for cuts. A printed installation guide comes in the box with the screws, and most product pages show an installation guide or video near the end of the description. When you join sections, the overlap tab of each new section goes on top of the section already installed.
5. Why is water running over my gutter guards in heavy rain?
Our guards are designed to handle the runoff from all standard residential roof pitches when they are installed correctly, so overflow usually points to an installation or gutter problem. Check that the guard isn't tilting back toward the house, that the sections aren't installed backwards, that old foam guards or debris were cleared out of the gutter first, and that your gutters slope toward clear downspouts. Valleys and inside corners collect water from two roof surfaces; if water spills over there, we recommend adding a splash guard at that corner. Text us photos or a short video at (973) 227-0717 and we'll help you find the cause.
6. Do I still need to clean my gutters?
Very little. Leaves and pine needles stay on top of the micromesh and usually blow off once they dry. Depending on your trees and roof, a small amount of very fine debris can work its way in over time, so check your gutters about once a year. If debris builds up on top of the guards, rinse it off with a garden hose. Remove any screens from your downspouts when you install the guards, because our lifetime warranty requires it.
Shipping & delivery
1. How fast will my order ship, and how long does delivery take?
Most products are in stock. In-stock orders usually ship from Pennsylvania the same business day if they are placed before our afternoon carrier pickup. Otherwise, they ship the next business day. We don't ship on weekends or holidays. Copper and other made-to-order items, such as less common colors, need about 2 extra business days. After your order ships, delivery usually takes 2 to 3 business days to most of the East Coast and Midwest, and longer to the West Coast. We email you a tracking number when your order ships. Faster shipping is possible but expensive because most of our boxes are about 5 feet long, so call us for a quote.
2. Is shipping free?
Yes, on orders of 100 feet or more, and you can mix colors to reach 100 feet. Orders under 100 feet ship for a flat $45, and samples always ship free. If you only need a few feet, call or text us first; we can often cut the sections shorter so they fit a smaller box that costs less to ship.
3. Part of my order is missing. What should I do?
Larger orders ship in more than one box, and the boxes can arrive on different days, so check the box label (for example, 1 of 2) and your tracking. All of the screws are packed in one labeled box. If a box doesn't arrive or you count fewer feet than you ordered, contact us with your order number and we'll ship the missing pieces right away.
4. Where do you ship?
We ship anywhere in the U.S., including U.S. territories and APO/FPO/DPO addresses, and to Canada, where shipping is expensive, so contact us for a quote first. We can ship to any address you choose, including a job site. If the checkout says it can't ship to your address, call or text us and we'll send you an invoice instead.
Samples
1. How do I order a sample?
Go to our Sample Gutter Guards page and pick the product, size and color. Each aluminum sample is a 1-foot section for $10 with free shipping (copper samples cost more), and samples usually ship the same business day. Order from the sample listing, not the regular product page, which sells full sections by the foot. If the cart gives you trouble, call or text (973) 227-0717 and we'll take care of it.
2. Can I get samples in more than one color or style?
Yes. Add each sample you want from our sample page. If you order more than one of the same sample on purpose, text us your order number at (973) 227-0717 so we know it was intended. If you're deciding between colors, text us your name, order number and the colors you're considering, and we'll do our best to include them. We often send two related styles, such as Micromesh and Goldguard, so you can see which one fits your gutters better.
3. Why did you contact me about a sample before shipping my order?
For some large first orders or less common colors, we may call or text to offer a free sample first, so you can check the fit and color before we ship a large, heavy order. If you're confident in your choice, just tell us and we'll ship your order right away.
About Art of Gutter
1. Are you still open? Where are you located?
Yes, we're open. In June 2026 we moved our main facility from Fairfield, New Jersey to Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, in the Poconos, and some online listings still show the old New Jersey location as closed. We now ship from Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania. Our office is open Monday through Friday and closed on weekends. If you'd like to pick up an order instead of having it shipped, call (973) 227-0717 first to check whether pickup is possible.
2. Are you the manufacturer?
Yes. Art of Gutter is a family-run company that designs and manufactures the Waterlock gutter guards we sell; we are not a reseller. Because we make them ourselves, you can order the exact footage you need, and we can often make less common colors and sizes to order.
3. Do you install gutter guards?
We install in parts of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania near our facilities. For a quote, email artofgutter@gmail.com with the approximate footage and a few photos of each side of the house. Outside that area we don't install, but any gutter contractor can install our guards, and Waterlock DIY is made for homeowners to install themselves.
Contractors & dealers
1. I'm a contractor. How do I get dealer pricing?
Fill out the short form on our Become a Dealer page. Dealer status is open to licensed contractors and to owners or employees of distributors and roofing companies, and there are no dealer fees. Once approved, you'll get a personal discount code by email; enter it at checkout with the same email address you used on the form. If the code doesn't work or you haven't heard back, check your spam folder, then call or text (973) 227-0717.
2. Can contractors get a sample kit?
Yes. Dealers can get free samples of any of our products, one or one of each, plus sales and marketing materials to show customers. Fill out the dealer form or email artofgutter@gmail.com with your business name and shipping address, and we'll send them out.
3. Can you ship in plain boxes or send a technical data sheet for a bid?
Yes to both. We can ship contractor orders in plain, unbranded boxes (we don't offer private labeling). For a product's technical data sheet for an upcoming bid, email artofgutter@gmail.com.
4. Can a supply house or distributor carry Waterlock?
Yes. Gutter and roofing supply houses can join through our dealer program, and we're glad to complete your vendor setup paperwork and send a price sheet. Purchase orders can be emailed to artofgutter@gmail.com.
Returns & warranty
1. What is your return policy?
You have 30 days after delivery to request a return: email artofgutter@gmail.com with your order number, and once the return is approved we'll send a return shipping label and instructions. Items must be unused and in their original packaging. Once we receive and inspect your return, we'll let you know if your refund is approved, and approved refunds go back to your original payment method. To exchange, return the item and place a new order. Copper products are final sale, marketplace orders (Amazon, Home Depot and others) are returned through that marketplace, and dealer orders follow the terms on our dealer page. See the full Shipping & Return Policy for details.
2. What warranty do the guards have?
Every Waterlock gutter guard is backed by our Lifetime Transferable 35-year Warranty, which covers defects in the product and transfers to the next owner of your home (keep your proof of purchase). It applies whether a contractor installs your guards or you install them yourself following our instructions. To make a claim, email artofgutter@gmail.com with photos and your proof of purchase, and if the product is defective we'll send replacement sections. The warranty covers the product, not the labor to remove or reinstall it.
3. What if my order arrives damaged or I get the wrong item?
Please check your order when it arrives. If anything is damaged, or we sent the wrong product or color, email artofgutter@gmail.com or text (973) 227-0717 right away with your order number and photos, and keep the packaging. If we made the mistake, we'll ship the correct product at no charge and send a prepaid label for anything that needs to come back.
